Pillowtop mattresses add a distinct comfort section above the main mattress body. That can create more cushioning, but “pillowtop” alone does not tell you whether the bed is soft, durable or cool.

What the pillowtop is made of matters

A pillowtop may contain latex, memory foam, polyfoam, wool, fiber or a blend. Those materials respond differently. Latex tends to feel more buoyant; memory foam usually contours more slowly and deeply.

Integrated versus removable

An integrated pillowtop is part of the mattress. A separate topper can be replaced or removed later, giving you more flexibility but a less unified construction.
